Hilltop HOUSE
Oak Bay, BC
Perched on the top of a hill overlooking a bay on the Straight of Georgia next to a park, the site affords 360 degree views and sunshine all day. Deep overhangs on the south and east, and vertical fin shades on the west, shade the interior from solar heat gain. The vertical cladding is black-stained cedar and prefinished steel, with aluminum-framed windows and skylights. The rooms and interior spaces are arranged to give ample room as well as privacy for a family of five, including a large roof terrace with a fireplace and open kitchen. Arranged on three levels, the house massing mimics the original crest of the hill that was flattened for a previous structure on the site. Three garden terraces and lush landscaping surround the house and provide a private setting for a 'Bunky' studio in the south-west corner of the site.
