Part of a comprehensive master plan located along Six Mile Road in the Town of View Royal, Lakeside Market is composed of four, two-storey commercial buildings which step down the hill from Northeast to Southwest. The buildings are separated by a terraced and richly landscaped courtyard that connects the surrounding streets and sidewalks with the pedestrian network of the adjacent park and nearby Galloping Goose Regional Trail. The architecture, colours and textures reflect the west coast context, the exceptional adjacent Garry Oak meadows and the natural surroundings of nearby Thetis Lake. The material palette for the exterior cladding is stained western red cedar, aluminum-frame glazing, pre-finished metal, and exposed concrete. Precedents for both the scale and aesthetics of the proposed buildings are two past projects by the architects; the View Royal Town Hall and Mattick’s Farm Market in Saanich, as well as the residential portion (Thetis Edge) of this overall site.
