LEGACY ART GALLERY DOWNTOWN, UNIVERSITY of VICTORIA
The University of Victoria commissioned the conversion of a former bank building that had once housed a restaurant and a glass-blowing studio. Initially the gallery housed a small coffee bar. The spaces were drastically reconfigured to accommodate a climate-controlled gallery, general exhibition space and a second-floor loft with offices and teaching spaces. The sub-grade level was restructured to become a storage archive and service space for the gallery. The Legacy Downtown is also a site for both university and public community programs and events. The University of Victoria Legacy Art Galleries is the university's art museum, responsible for the accessibility and stewardship of an art collection which consists of approximately 18,000 objects including Canadian, Indigenous and international historic and contemporary art.
